                                           Roger William Poppe

Roger Poppe was born October 12, 1935 in Cook, Nebraska, to Leonard and Bertha (Lipps) Poppe. He was the oldest of three children. He attended District 41 through the eighth grade. After graduating from Cook High in 1953, he began farming before being drafted into the army from 1958-1960. Upon his return from serving overseas, he found work in Grant, Nebraska, where he met his future bride, a young school teacher, Pat Lindquist. They were married in Wahoo on June 18, 1965, and they were soon blessed with two sons. The couple moved to their present location in 1966 when Roger began farming with his father.

Roger’s God-given talent was as a herdsman and keeper of the land. He had no need for hobbies even after his retirement in 2000. The land and the animals were his passion and his daily ritual included a trip on his four-wheel Mule to inspect the farm, checking fence, counting livestock, and rustling thistles.

Roger was a dedicated family man and farmer, honest and hard-working.  He could always be counted upon to lend a helping hand to a friend or neighbor in need.  He never squandered anything and was well-known for his frugal ways. A man of faith his entire life, he was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's UCC Osage. He served his church in a variety of roles over the years from Sunday School Superintendent to church treasurer.

He loved his two granddaughters and cherished their visits. He also enjoyed frequent phone calls from his boys. The family was all home for Roger’s 80th birthday and the 50th wedding anniversary in 2015.

Roger passed away at home on June 6, 2016, at the age of 80. The family is rejoicing in the full health and loving care he is receiving from God.

Roger is survived by his wife, Patricia (Lindquist) Poppe of rural Cook, sons: Gregg Poppe and wife Jana of Prior Lake, MN and Eric Poppe and wife Patti of Grass Lake, MI, granddaughters: Margaret and Elizabeth, sister: Marianne Parde and husband Wayne of Cook, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Donald.
