Mary Sophia (West) Carnagey
Sophia Carnagey was born December 5, 1937 in Princess Ann, Virginia to the late Roland and Madge (Wood) West. She attended Princess Ann High School and graduated from St. Vincent De Paul School of Nursing in Norfolk, Virginia with her RN degree in nursing. Sophia then met Leonard David Carnagey, Sr. and they married September 3, 1960. This union was blessed with three children, David, Lisa and Robert.
Sophie lived a life of service working at Methodist Hospital of Houston and OB/Gyn Associates for 60 years. When she began her career, she worked alongside Dr. Red Duke and the famous heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey. She enjoyed tending to her flower gardens, reading novels and her animals, which included horses and her beloved boxers. Sophie was also known to have a pet pig, geese and cats.
Sophie worked until her health began to decline and she moved to Tecumseh in September of 2021 to be closer to her children. She passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at the age of 84 years.
Sophie was preceded in death by her husband Leonard, son Robert, son-in-law Leonard Barras and sisters-in-law, Molly West and Sherrill Harland.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law David and Paula Carnagey of Tecumseh, daughter Lisa Barras of Tecumseh, eight grandchildren, Katherine (Justin)Miller, Jennifer (Brandon) Howell, Loran Barras, Hanna Carnagey, Landri Barras, Logan Barras, Sofia Carnagey and Helena Carnagey, 9 great-grandchildren, brother Hugh West of Austin, TX and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2022 at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska with AseraCare Chaplain Pastor Jeff Petersen officiating. The service was also livestreamed on the Wherry Mortuary/Wherry Monument Facebook page. A link to the livestream is now available at the bottom of Sophia's webpage.
