Shirley Wiers Obituary

Shirley Ann (Schnepp) Wiers, 92, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2023 at Colonial Acres of Humboldt.  She was born to John and Dora (Heiniger) Schnepp on September 19, 1930 at their home, south of Pawnee City. In 1933 they moved to the “100 Acres” northwest of DuBois.  This was where she grew up along with her brother and sister, helping on the family farm.

She received her education at District #70 (North Star) school. Like many of the farm children of that generation, she was only able to attend school through the eighth grade.  During those school years, she developed a life-long love of reading.  On April 17, 1949 Shirley was baptized into membership at the DuBois Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Shirley and Vernon "Pete" Wiers were united in marriage on January 28, 1949 by Rev. Paul L. Dick at the church parsonage in DuBois.  Four children were later born to this union: Julia, Linda, Vern, and John.  They began married life in a second floor apartment in DuBois.  In March of 1950 they moved to the farm, where Shirley lived for the next 66 years.  She later moved to an apartment in Pawnee City in 2016 and finally to Humboldt in 2020. Shirley loved the farm, especially her cows.  In addition to keeping up with the farm chores and four kids, she planted a huge garden.  The garden kept the family fed year-round with canned and frozen produce.  It was a lot of work, but an accomplishment she took a lot of pride in. Shirley wanted to help out, as much as she was able on the farm until moving to town.

Shirley was employed at the Pawnee Manor for over 20 years, most of the time as a cook.  She would arrive early and bring along handiwork to do until time to clock in. Quilt blocks were embroidered to make a quilt for each of the children and afghans were made for all the grandkids.  Reading and jigsaw puzzles were always favorite activities too.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Pete, son Vern, grandson Michael Luedders, brother Lee Roy, sisters-in-law Zelma Schnepp and Sharon Schnepp.

Shirley is survived by daughters, Julia (Marvin) Luedders of Burchard, NE, Linda (Jim) Scott of Greenwood, NE, daughter-in-law Kay Wiers of Seneca, KS, son John (Vickie) Wiers of Pawnee City, NE, ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, sister Mildred (Steve) Avery and nieces.
