Peggy (Aswegan) Packett, 88, of Pawnee City, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Gold Crest Retirement Center in Adams, Nebraska, surrounded by the love of her family.
Peggy was born on December 17, 1936, in Fern, Iowa to Glenn and Neta (Harris) Aswegan. She was the third of nine children and spent her early years attending several schools throughout Iowa, ultimately graduating in 1954. Shortly after, Peggy proudly joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at the 78th Fighter Group at Hamilton Air Force Base in California. It was there she met the love of her life, Lowell Packett.
On her 19th birthday, December 17, 1955, Peggy and Lowell were united in marriage in Reno, Nevada. Together, they built a life of service and adventure, raising three children-Dianna, Larry and Joan- while traveling across the country and abroad with Lowell’s military career. Their family lived in numerous locations including Hamilton AFB (CA), Offutt AFB (NE), Fort Riley (KS), White Sands Missile Range (NM), Fort Bliss (TX), Stuttgart and Kaiserslautern (Germany), Sandia Base (NM), and Fort Bragg (NC).
While in North Carolina, Peggy followed her calling to care for others by pursuing her career in nursing. In 1973, she graduated as a salutatorian from the Licensed Practical Nursing program at Fayetteville Technical Institute. After moving to Pawnee City, she worked for a time at Pawnee City Manor, where she compassionately cared for residents and neighbors alike.
Peggy’s retirement years were far from idle. She and Lowell spent five years renovating homes throughout Pawnee City. Peggy was a devoted Army wife, loving mother and grandmother, and active member of her community. She was a life member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Post 168, served as Scoutmaster for the Robison Barracks Boy Scout Troop in Stuttgart Germany, and was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Pawnee City, serving on various committees. Peggy found joy in gardening, sewing, volunteering, and supporting her children’s endeavors.
