Merlen L. Hothan, 91, of rural Burchard, Nebraska passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at his home. He was born on December 14, 1931 at the family home, near Mayberry, Nebraska to George and Dorothea (Woltemath) Hothan. Merlen’s confirmation verse is: Psalm 103: 1-2. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1949.
He was united in marriage to Sarah Lou Hull on December 31, 1961 in East Berlin, Pennsylvania. Merlen and Sarah Lou made their home on the Hothan family farm where Merlen farmed with his father. He was active in rural youth, church and served on the Lewiston School Board. In addition to farming, he also worked at BSDC, Beatrice 77 Livestock and with “The Auctioneers” to set up sales.
Merlen is survived by his wife Sarah Lou, sisters Lois Nye and Janet Zigler (Dell), children Suzette Moeller (Rod), Pam Fischer and Randy Hothan (Barb); grandchildren, James Moeller, Zachary Moeller, Ashley Hothan and Sam Hothan (Callie), nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ruby Kaufman, brothers-in-law Tom Kaufman and Herman Nye, niece Vicki McNutt, son-in-law Jeff Fischer and granddaughter Emily Fischer.
Funeral services at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at Salem U.C.C. Church, rural Steinauer, Nebraska, Reverend Ken Tubbesing officiating.
Visitation on Monday, April 24, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 3-5 p.m., at Wherry Mortuary, 919 G Street, Pawnee City, Nebraska.
