Merle Oren Mehlin, 88, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on December 30, 1935, in Humboldt, Nebraska to Claude and Nora (Clark) Mehlin. He was baptized at the Pleasant View Methodist Church and later confirmed on August 5, 1956, at St. James (Long Branch) Lutheran Church. Merle was raised on the family farm where he attended Bratton Union Consolidated School and graduated with the class of 1953.
On December 20, 1957, Merle was united in marriage to Marleen Koehler at St. James (Long Branch) Lutheran Church in rural Humboldt. To this union three children, Diana, Kim, and Ken were born. Merle farmed most of his life and also worked for Stansbury Implement, O.A. Cooper Company, and Eldon Snoke Farm. After retiring, he drove bus for Humboldt schools and worked maintenance for the Parkview Heights apartments in Humboldt. Merle was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Humboldt where he served as an elder and on various boards and committees.
Merle passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the Pawnee County Memorial Hospital in Pawnee City, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of eighty-eight years, three months, and twenty-five days. He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law Clarence and Hulda Koehler, brothers Robert “Bob” and Donald Mehlin, a sister Carol Jean Nanninga, brothers-in-law: Delbert McMurray, Leroy Koehler and Keith Root, and sister-in-law Lola Mehlin.
Merle is survived by his wife Marleen of Humboldt, NE; daughters: Diana Boring and husband Rick of Lincoln, Kim Standerford and husband Joe of Humboldt, son Ken Mehlin and wife Cindy of Kearney, NE; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren, plus one on the way; a sister Connie Root of Auburn, NE; sisters-in-law: Lorna McMurray of Adams, NE; Linda Koehler of Marysville, KS; Celma Higgins and husband Phil of New Virginia, IA; Terrie Chandler of Florida, brother-in-law Chuck Nanninga of Humboldt, NE; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Tim Llewellyn officiating. Interment will immediately follow services at the Humboldt Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at the Wherry Mortuary, 207 N. Nemaha Street in Humboldt. Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the mortuary.
