Maxine Hunzeker Obituary

Maxine Marie (Gottula) Hunzeker, 97, of Humboldt, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2021, at the Community Medical Center in Falls City, Nebraska.  She was born on October 25, 1923, to Albert and Esther (Damm) Gottula in Steinauer, Nebraska.

Maxine was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Peters Lutheran Church, rural Elk Creek, Nebraska.  She attended country school at Clear Creek and St. Peter’s Lutheran Parochial School.  Maxine graduated from Table Rock High School in 1941.  After high school, Maxine taught country school at Bunker Hill for one year.

Maxine married Jacob “Jake” Hunzeker on June 1, 1942.  To this union four children were born, Ronald, Joyce, Carol and Shirley.  Maxine was a busy farm wife, mother and homemaker.  Maxine was no stranger to hard work and farm life, being the daughter of a farmer growing up during the Depression.

In 1959, while yet working on the farm, Maxine began working at Danny Dare sewing factory in Auburn, Nebraska, where she worked as a seamstress for 39 years.  Maxine was a wonderful seamstress and over the years enjoyed making clothes and gifts for her children and grandchildren.

In 2018, Maxine entered Colonial Acres of Humboldt where she spent her remaining years.  While there, she enjoyed playing cards, bingo and working jigsaw puzzles.  She often mentioned, “If she couldn’t be at home, this was a good place to be.”  Maxine appreciated the special care provided by the staff and the friendships made at Colonial Acres.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Esther Gottula, husband, Jake Hunzeker, grandson, Dean Rexroth, brother, Kenneth (Maxine) Gottula and sisters, Lois (Boyd) Bowen, Ardis (Arthur) Hunzeker.

She is survived by her son, Ronald (Linda) of Table Rock, NE, daughters, Joyce (Terry) Farrington of Akeley, MN, Carol (Larry) Rexroth of Humboldt, NE, Shirley (John) Dolsky of Humboldt, NE, 10 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, brother, Harold (Beverly) Gottula of Steinauer, NE, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
