Leroy Don Barnes

Leroy Don Barnes, 63, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on October 10, 1959, in Humboldt, Nebraska to Raymond E. and Eunice J. (James) Barnes.  He was raised in Humboldt where he received his schooling and graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1977.  Leroy was united in marriage to Roxanne Tate and the couple would later divorce.  Leroy worked for many years as a mechanic for Blecha 66 gas station in Humboldt and later worked as a ground’s keeper at Kirkman’s Cove Golf Course.  He was a member of the Humboldt Fire Department for many years and currently a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post #269. Leroy was active and served the post for many years in the honor guard and with Memorial Day ceremonies.

Leroy passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at the Bryan LGH Medical Center East in Lincoln, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of sixty-three years, six months, and fifteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, older sister Althea Gerdes, and nephew Steve Gerdes.

Leroy is survived by his brothers: Dwaine Barnes and wife Charlene of Austin, TX; Jim Barnes and wife Tako of Las Vegas, NV; his sister Grace Barnes of Lincoln, NE; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Graveside Inurnment Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 5, 2023, at the Humboldt Cemetery with Pastor Howard Blecha officiating.  

A register book will be available to sign from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at the Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt, Nebraska.   

In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions are suggested to the Humboldt Fire Department and Southeast Nebraska Cancer Garden.
