Leland Elroy Frank was born to Ernest and Mildred (Mosher) Frank on November 7, 1921 at Table Rock, Nebraska. He attended 1st and 2nd grade at Table Rock, moved to Pawnee City and attended Sheridan until 1930, moved 5 ½ miles north of Table Rock and attended Bunker Hill where he graduated from the eighth grade. Leland graduated from Table Rock High School in 1941.
He served his country in the United States Navy from June 20, 1942 until his honorable discharge on December 5, 1945 during WWII. He took his basic training in the Great Lakes. Leland was involved with invasions in Licota, Sicily, Naples, Italy, Solerno and Bari, Italy, Leyte Gulf, Manila, Philippines, Luzon Island, Okinawa Island and Corregidor Island. After returning from the war, Leland returned to farming and agriculture. He sold Case Machinery from 1950-1952. Leland farmed south of Pawnee City from 1953 till his retirement in 1986.
Leland was united in marriage to Delores Burow on December 5, 1949 in Wahoo, Nebraska. To this union two sons were born, Gary and Terry. Delores passed away December 2, 1971. Leland married Imogene (Williamson) Gridley on February 3, 1973 at Faith Lutheran Church in Humboldt, Nebraska. He was baptized and became a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Humboldt, in 1973. Leland’s greatest love was farming and spending time with his family. After retirement, Leland and Imogene traveled in their 5th wheel camper for about 15 years to many locations in the southwest states. He enjoyed wood working and was very handy in making things like blue bird houses, bird feeders and other projects in his shop
When his health declined, Leland became a resident of Colonial Acres in Humboldt, Nebraska. He passed away there on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at the age of 99 years.
Leland is survived by his wife, Imogene of Humboldt, sons, Gary Frank and wife Cheryl of Waverly and Terry Frank and wife Brenda of Humboldt, step-sons, Dennis Gridley and wife Gail of Elizabeth, CO, Scott Gridley and wife Theresa of Elizabeth, CO and Gary Gridley and wife Sandi of Lincoln, 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Delores, brothers, Charles Frank and wife Verlea, Lorraine “Johnny” Frank and wife LeAnna, sisters, Marguritte “Butch” Mertes and husband Leonard and Orlene Thiemann and husband Everette, great-grandson Kasey Colvin, nieces, Audrey Thiemann and Bette Fisher, nephews, Kenneth Frank, Alton Gottula and Mike Thiemann and great-nephew Jacob Stoddard.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2020 at the Table Rock Cemetery, Table Rock, Nebraska with Rev. Tim Llewellyn officiating. The service will be radio broadcast on FM 88.7 for those attending who choose to stay in their vehicles and also livestreamed on the Wherry Mortuary/Wherry Monument Facebook page. The link to the livestream will also be available later on Leland's webpage.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wed. Dec. 30, 2020 and 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Thurs. Dec. 31, 2020 at the Wherry Mortuary, Humboldt, Nebraska.
Memorials may go to the family's choice.
Interment will be in the Table Rock Cemetery, Table Rock, Nebraska with full military rites provided by the Harvey Mann American Legion Post # 269 of Humboldt, Table Rock Brown-Hays American Legion Post #289, Pawnee City VFW Post #5289, and the United States Navy Honor Guard.
