LeRoy Allen Mitchel of Tecumseh, passed away peacefully at the age of 90, on September 11, 2024 at Bryan East Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. LeRoy was born October 30, 1933, to Allen and Selma (Harding) Mitchel of Fremont, NE. Leroy was the youngest of 4, graduated from Fremont High School in 1950 and that same year was drafted into the US Army. After completing his enlistment during the Korean War, LeRoy attended the University of Nebraska before taking a welding position at Nebraska Boiler.
In 1961, LeRoy and Janice Lawhead were married and had three kids - Terri, Kelly and Allen. LeRoy moved his family to a farm west of Tecumseh in 1971 and then into Tecumseh in 1977 where he remained until his final years at Gold Crest Retirement Center in Adams. Roughly six months after Janice’s passing in 2013, LeRoy drove and lived in Alaska for several months on his own, loving every minute there and he also returned to Alaska for several years to go salmon fishing.
In 2017, LeRoy began a cherished relationship with Diane Baird. Together they spent many days fishing, at museums or just driving throughout the area to reminisce. In later years, when LeRoy’s health began to decline, Diane routinely would drive him to Dr. appts, for lunch or even bring lunch to him at Gold Crest Retirement Center. Diane was a source of strength and support for LeRoy right to the very end.
LeRoy is preceded in death by his wife Jan, brothers Doug Mitchel and Jim Mitchel and wife Bernie and sister Jackie Nelson and husband Wally and many friends.
