Larry W. O'Brien

Larry O’Brien, a resident of Cook, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, family, and a deep appreciation for life.

A proud Irishman, Larry was born in Petersburg, Nebraska on March 17, 1941, to Dr. Paul and Betty O’Brien. He grew up in Orleans, Nebraska, and graduated from Orleans High School in 1959.

In 1960, Larry proudly served his country by joining the United States Navy. During his service, he worked in aviation electronics with the VAW-13 “Zappers” squadron. Larry often shared stories of his adventures and experiences in the squadron, taking great pride in his contributions and the camaraderie he experienced. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1963.

Following his military service, Larry began a dedicated career with the United States Postal Service. His commitment and leadership led him to serve as Postmaster of the Cook, Nebraska Post Office, a role in which he took great pride – even after his early retirement in 1993.

Larry was a loving father to his three children: Jennifer Lomax, Danny O’Brien, and Chelsea O’Brien. He was also a proud and devoted grandfather to his four grandchildren: Marissa Lomax, Keilee O’Brien, Jerzie Linneman, and Kadence Linneman. Larry found immense joy in his family and cherished every moment spent with them.

He is survived by his two daughters, Jennifer and Chelsea; his four grandchildren; his brother, Jim O’Brien of Spalding, Nebraska; and many other extended family members and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Betty O’Brien; his brothers, Jerry, Pat, and John (“Buck”) O’Brien; and his son, Danny (“Dan-O”) O’Brien.

He had a warm spirit, a great appreciation for storytelling, with a quick wit and a knack for one-liners. Larry will be remembered as an avid fisherman, a lover of books, and Forever Dedicated To fighting the good fight.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.
