Joan Marie (Banzhaf) Stalder, 92, of Humboldt, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025, in West Des Moines, Iowa. She was born on May 1, 1933, in Humboldt, Nebraska to William and Bertha (Fencl) Banzhaf. Joan spent most of her life in the Humboldt area, a community she loved and served throughout her life. She was a proud graduate of the Humboldt High School class of 1950. Joan began her professional career with the State of Nebraska’s Child Welfare Office. She later worked for G & S Manufacturing in Auburn for 11 years before spending 24 years with the Omaha Public Power District in Humboldt, where she remained until her retirement.
From a previous marriage, Joan was blessed with one son, Ken. On July 8, 1975, she married Stan Stalder, with whom she shared many wonderful years until his passing in October 2024. After Stan’s death, Joan moved to Edencrest at Green Meadows in Johnston, Iowa, to be closer to her son and his family. There, she embraced an exciting new chapter, making dear friends, enjoying the company of kindhearted staff, and enthusiastically participating in exercise classes, bingo, and social gatherings. Known for her wit and spirit, Joan often quipped, “If you’re bored here, it’s your own damn fault!” She especially treasured being near her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her great joy in her later years.
Joan had many passions. She was a loyal fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Kansas City Royals, a dedicated gardener, and an avid angler. Her deep faith guided her throughout her life, and she was a devoted member and volunteer at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt.
She is survived by her son, Ken Krofta (Mary Helen) of Johnston, IA; stepdaughters Shari Jaros (Chuck) of Humboldt and Julie Shepard (Don) of Omaha; grandchildren Nathan (Becky) of Urbandale, IA; Eric (Rachel) of Ames, IA; and Madison (Justin) of Omaha, NE; and nine beloved great-grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable happiness. Joan was preceded in death by her husband Stan, her parents, and her brother Gerald.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Southeast Nebraska Memorial Cancer Garden or Humboldt United Methodist Church.
