Ida Irene (Kanel) Gilbert

Ida Irene (Kanel) Gilbert, 88, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on the family farm in rural Du Bois, Nebraska on May 6, 1925, the 7th of 10 Children born to Albert Clyde and Laura Velma (Pelton) Farwell. She attended grade school in Du Bois and later graduated from Du Bois High School with the class of 1943. On December 11, 1943, Ida was united in marriage to John Alfred Kanel in Hiawatha, Kansas. To this union, three children, Dwaine, Linda, and Jay were born. While John was serving his country, Ida and Dwaine resided with her parents until John returned from service. Upon his return, the couple then spent their lives raising their family, feeding cattle, and farming. They enjoyed many vacations traveling and visiting relatives around the country. John passed away in April of 1980. Ida married Kenny Gilbert in Table Rock, Nebraska on October 17, 1987. They lived on the farm South of Humboldt until Ida's health declined and she became a resident of the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in October of 2008. Ida was a member of the Four-Mile Congregational Church South of Humboldt. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and made many items for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Ida passed away at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska on Sunday, May 12, 2013, having reached the age of eighty-eight years and six days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands John A. Kanel and Kenneth Gilbert, brother Horace (Leola) Farwell, sisters: Margaret (Leon) Korber, Alberta (Howard) Koester, Lavinna (Fred) Thiemann, Laura (Lawrence) Meier, Jennie (Lyle) Boehner, a brother-in-law Ernest Klaudt, and granddaughter Lisa (McNealy) Schaardt. Ida is survived by her children: Dwaine (Kathy) Kanel; Linda (Jack) McNealy; Jay (Pat) Kanel all of Humboldt, NE; grandchildren: Beth Anne (Brit) Langley of St. Joseph, MO; Neal (Bonnie) of Dawson, NE; David (Vicki) McNealy of Humboldt, NE; Steve Schaardt of Table Rock, NE; James (Candie) McNealy of Humboldt, NE; Michael (Kari) Kanel of Dawson, NE; Jayson Kanel of Humboldt, NE; Kelly (Jed) Shupp of Humboldt, NE; great-grandchildren: Caroline & Zachary Langley, John & Grace Kanel, Craig & Ali, Jake & Casey McNealy, Hank & Peyton Schaardt, Jayden & Jaylie McNealy, and Kassidy Kanel; brothers: Roy (Kay) Farwell of Du Bois, NE; Richard (Doris) Farwell of Du Bois, NE; Dean (Loree) Farwell of Seneca, KS; sister-in-law Nina (Kanel) Klaudt of Ft. Myers, FL; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at The Four-Mile Congregational Church South of Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Ron Russell officiating.

Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at The Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt, Nebraska. Family will greet friends from 6:30-8 p.m. at the mortuary.
