Helen Rose (Sperfslage) Gyhra

Helen Rose (Sperfslage) Gyhra, 90, formerly of Steinauer Nebraska, passed away at the Life Care Center in Seneca, Kansas on Friday, October 20, 2023.  She was born on September 30, 1933 to Henry and Regina (Deters) Sperfslage in St. Benedict, Kansas. The family later moved to Oneida, Kansas were she attended Pleasant View Country School. Helen said she was a "domestic worker" because she cleaned houses for people prior to her marriage. 

Helen married Joseph L. Gyhra on September 2, 1958 at St. Bede’s Catholic Church, Kelly, Kansas. To this union five children were born, Diana, Joyce, Joseph H., Alan and Eric.

Joseph and Helen moved to rural Burchard where they raised their family.  She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and tending to the livestock, especially her chickens. Later in life, Helen became blind and enjoyed listening to Catholic Spirit radio and cooking shows. She kept her house immaculate and continued to cook and bake.  She always had goodies for the kids and grandchildren after Mass every Saturday night.

Helen was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Steinauer, Nebraska and St. Ann’s Altar Society. She was a beautiful soul, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed by all her family and friends.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Regina Sperfslage, husband Joseph L. Gyhra, grandchildren, Brandon Gyhra and Nick Thiemann, brothers, Irvin, Emmett, Donald and infant brothers Richard and Louis Sperfslage and sisters, Charlotte Deters and Mary Gyhra.

Helen is survived by her children, Diana Thiemann and fiancé Doug Frohberg and Joyce Krueger and husband Greg, Joseph H. Gyhra and wife Jana, Alan Gyhra and wife Marcia and Eric Gyhra, 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Mary Ann Sperfslage, several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial Services: 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 26, 2023, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Steinauer, Nebraska. Father Michael Christensen officiating.  Visitation on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Wherry Mortuary, 919 G Street, Pawnee City, Nebraska.  Rosary at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Steinauer, Nebraska.  Interment at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery, Steinauer, Nebraska.  Memorials to family's choice.  Online condolences may be left at www.wherrymortuary.com.  Services entrusted to Wherry Mortuary, 919 G Street, Pawnee City, Nebraska.
