Geraldine Hupka Obituary

Geraldine "Jerrie" Hupka was the youngest of three daughters born to John W. and Lucy (McAuliffe) Murphy was born May 26, 1926 in Tecumseh, Nebraska. She lived with her family on a farm west of Tecumseh until the death of her father in 1932. Upon her mother's marriage to John P. Murphy, the family moved into Tecumseh where she attended and graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1943. After high school, Jerrie was employed by the local Lincoln Telephone & Telegraph Company. She was united in marriage to Joseph F. Hupka on April 26, 1949 in Tecumseh, Nebraska. After her marriage to Joe, the couple made their home on Jerrie's childhood farm home west of Tecumseh. She was a farm wife, preparing meals, sewing and mending, keeping up the household, raising her son and helping where she could with the farm activities. For a period of time, Jerrie raised and cared for a hatching flock and sold the eggs to Ford Hatchery in Tecumseh. Jerrie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church as well as a member of St. Andrew's Altar Society and more recently St. Mary's Altar Society. Jerrie enjoyed baking, finding and trying new recipes, and until recent years was an avid fan of couponing. She liked to relax doing crossword and other word puzzles. Jerrie also enjoyed working with numbers and put it to use keeping up the farm account books. Jerrie and Joe spent many evenings, "dancing the night away" as they enjoyed ballroom dancing and square dancing. After Joe's passing on Sept. 27, 2009, Jerrie enjoyed being at home or spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When her health declined, she became a resident of Gold Crest Retirement Center in Adams. Jerrie passed away there on May 30, 2022 at the age of 96 years.She is survived by her son Steven Hupka and wife Barb of rural Sterling, granddaughter, Kristin Leuenberger and husband Joe of Waverly, grandson Matthew Hupka and wife Andrea of Lincoln, honorary granddaughter Tamra Johnston of Elkhorn, great-grandsons Cole and Alex Leuenberger, great-granddaughter, Hannah Johnston and honorary great-granddaughters Lily and Macy Johnston, sister-in-law Helen Hupka of Cook and several nieces and nephews. Jerrie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph, sisters, Genevieve Allen and brother-in law Clifford, Mary Myrtle Gibbs and brother-in-law Keith, step-fathers John P. Murphy and Patrick S. Burns, parents in law Julia (Kerner) and Barney Hupka, sister-in-law, Janice Sobotta and husband Tim, brother-in-law Clarence Hupka, nephews Robert Hupka, Tim Sobotta, Jr., John Gibbs and James Allen. Mass of Christian Burial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2022 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Mary, Nebraska with Father Craig Clinch officiating. The service was also livestreamed on the Wherry Mortuary/Wherry Monument Facebook page and a link to the livestream is now available on Jerrie's tribute wall. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2022 at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska. Memorials may go to the family's choice. Interment will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, St. Mary, Nebraska.Online condolences may be left @ www.wherrymortuary.com.
