Frances Jane Wolken was born August 7, 1927 to Clarence Michael and Anna Theresa (Christen) Wenzl on the farm north of Steinauer, Nebraska. She was the oldest of eleven children born to this union. Frances attended St. Anthony’s Parochial School through the eighth grade, walking 3 miles each way to attend school. She worked hard on the family farm helping with chores and raising her siblings.
She was united in marriage to Glen Dirk Wolken on November 18, 1953 at the Convent House in Steinauer, Nebraska. Five children were born to this union. Frances and Glen made their home east of Tecumseh where they raised their family.
Frances was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Steinauer until her marriage when she transferred to St. Andrew’s Catholic in Tecumseh. She served as president of the St. Andrew Altar Society for four years. She was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and a member of Extension Club. Frances enjoyed sewing, gardening and canning. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Her husband Glen died April 8, 2013. Frances passed away October 29, 2023 at Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska at the age of 96 years.
She is survived by her sons Richard Wolken and Sandie LaVigne and her children Cole and Sydney, Michael D. Wolken and wife Tracy of Tecumseh and her three children, Paul Dylan, Whitney and Harrison Fosco and Daniel D. Wolken and wife Kelly of Syracuse, grandchildren, Liza Wolken-Masters and husband Dan and Lance Wolken and wife Amanda, great-grandchildren, Camden, Calla and Chloe Masters and Iris Wolken, brothers John and Kathleen Wenzl and Robert and Ruth Wenzl of Lincoln, sister Louise Kavanaugh of Omaha, sisters-in-law Marcia Wenzl of Tecumseh and Helen Silva of Omaha, nieces and nephews.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband Glen, son Larry, daughter Lisa, brothers Jerome, Eugene, Ronnie and George Wenzl and sisters Alice Merrifield, Dorothy Burroughs and Florence Wenzl.
Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 3, 2023 at the St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tecumseh, Nebraska with Father Thomas McGuire officiating. The service was also livestreamed on the Wherry Mortuary Facebook page for those unable to attend. The link to the livestream is also now available on the bottom of Frances' webpage.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, November 2, 2023 at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. at the church.
Memorials may go to the St. Andrew Catholic Church or St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery.
Inurnment will be in the St. Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery, Tecumseh, Nebraska.
