Carl Ross Smith

Carl Ross Smith, 85, of DuBois, Nebraska passed away at his home in DuBois on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 with family at his side.  He was born September 14, 1934 at home in Strout, Illinois to Thurman Ross and Margaret Jane (Taylor) Smith.  At the age of 5, his family moved from Strout to rural Pearl, Illinois where Carl graduated from Pearl High School in 1953.  Carl was inducted into the U.S. Army May 21, 1957 where he served his country as a heavy equipment operator and was sent to Europe to rebuild after WW II.  He was discharged from the Army as an E5 on April 30,1963.  Carl married Vera Louise Franklin in 1962 and to this union two children, Kimberly Ann and Michael Ross Smith, were born.  Carl and Louise later divorced in 1985 and Carl married Phyllis Elaine Andrews in October 1988.  Carl was preceded in death by his parents, a great granddaughter Mackenzie Elizabeth Horton and step-granddaughter Kaeliauna RaeAnn Young. 

He is survived by his wife Phyllis, of the home, his daughter, Kimberly Gross and husband Tony, son, Michael Smith, stepson, Corey Young and wife Virginia, grandchildren, Kara Lynn Gross, Katherine Elizabeth Gross, Steven Michael Smith, Hillary Dawn Horton and husband Howard,  great-granddaughters, Lyndsey Nichelle Smith and Abbygail Elizabeth Horton, step-grandchildren:  Ashlyn, Christina, Joshua, Carrie, Brianna, Jonathan, Aleciauna and Kaitlin, brothers,  Donald Udell and wife Maxine, Larry Gale and wife Molly and Kevin Kent and wife Lisa, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.  

Private Graveside Services will be held at a later date at the Omaha National Veterans Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 27, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. at Wherry Mortuary, 919 G Street, Pawnee  City, Nebraska.  Memorials contributions are suggested to the family with a later designation.  Condolences may be shared online at www.wherrymortuary.com.
