Anna Rose (Meyer) Lang, the oldest of seven children, was born on November 25, 1927 to Emery & Lydia (Bieri) Meyer at home on the farm southeast of Bern, Kansas. The “Ramsey Place”, as it was lovingly called, was located 1 1/4 mile north of the country Apostolic Christian Church on the east side of the road. She attended Sunday school and church at that place of worship during her youth.
Anna Rose was always willing to lend a helping hand to her parents with every day work on the farm and especially assisting in the caring of her 3 younger brothers and 3 younger sisters. At times, Anna Rose helped the elderly in the community with garden work in the summertime where she earned a few “sheckles” or in other words, a little bit of money to give to her parents to help with the expenses of raising a large family during the years of The Great Depression.
She attended Prairie Star School for 8 years just 3/4 of mile north of the family home then attended Bern High School. She later graduated from Humboldt High School, Humboldt, Nebraska in 1945 after her marriage to Art.
Anna Rose met the love of her life, Arthur L. Lang, at the Humboldt Fair in September, 1944 while Art was working at a Burow Bros. gas station. On March 3, 1945 the two lovebirds (ages 17 & 18) eloped to Hiawatha, KS and were married with close friends, Eddie Blecha and Muriel Streeter along as witnesses. Art & Ann celebrated 68 1/2 years of marriage before Art passed away on September 3, 2013. The Richardson County Fair remained a memorable event every year that they attended each and every day. Their undying love for each other was very evident to all who saw them stroll through life, hand in hand, with each other….the truest picture of genuine love between a husband and wife.
In June, 1945, Art was inducted in to the U.S. Army and was forced to leave his young bride at home when he left on a train bound for Fort Lewis, Washington. Ann later joined him and they made their first home in a small apartment in Tacoma, Washington. After 13 months there, they returned to southeast Nebraska and purchased the farm 4 miles north of DuBois were they raised their 4 children; Ardis, Allen, Arden and Anita. Fourteen grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 15 great great grandchildren have roamed, played and made memories at the farm joined by several dogs and half a herd of cats.
Anna Rose was a helpmate to Art in the farming operation; always ready at a moment’s notice to run to neighboring towns to get parts or take meals to the field for hungry men and boys. This continued when Art began the construction business and she again did whatever was needed from fetching wrenches in the shop to holding the survey stick on new terraces.
Until elder years set in, Ann raised a huge garden and canned her many fruits and vegetables. She loved her flowers and bushes, some of which had been transplanted from her own mother’s flowerbeds.
For years, Art and Ann together shared the hobby of family genealogy. They traveled the countryside visiting cemeteries, finding graves, researching courthouse records and old newspapers for family information and attending countless family reunions. Along the way they shared cups of coffee with new found relatives who quickly became lifelong friends.
She was a friend to all and was lovingly called “Mom” and “Grandma Lang” to many of her kids’ and grandkids’ friends. Many tell stories of her huge delicious meals. No one ever left her kitchen table hungry. “Grandma’s Goulash” was always requested by the grandkids…and lots of it!!!
Anna Rose loved God with all of her heart. She had a personal relationship with her Lord & Saviour. She met Jesus face to face on Monday morning, October 24, 2022 when she passed away at the Pawnee County Memorial Hospital in Pawnee City, Nebraska. She served in many offices at the DuBois United Methodist Church and the Women’s Society over the years and was also in the women’s choir. Over her later years, many people would come up to her and say thank you because they remembered her being their Sunday school or Bible School teacher.
Her generosity and compassion were evident to all. She and Art made it a point to always help others in their time of need. She helped organize countless funeral luncheons sponsored by the church and American Legion Auxiliary. Ann was always busy with one event or another.
Ann was active member of the Chester R. Kerl Post #39 American Legion Auxiliary in DuBois for over 70 years where she served in every office. She was currently treasurer and membership chairman; offices she held for 50 years. She assisted in baking dozens of cookies at Christmas time to be mailed to service men and women who were serving in the Armed Forces all over the world.
For several years she was the receptionist & greeter for the Red Cross Blood Mobile at various locations in Pawnee City. Never knowing a stranger, she greeted each person with a smile and friendly hello.
Everyday you found her watching her favorite game shows, “Price is Right”, “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune”. At 9 am every morning she was watching “Pure Nebraska”. And being a true farm wife, she never missed watching Channel 10/11 News and Weather so she would know if it was going to rain tomorrow and what grain prices are doing.
Anna Rose was the pillar of strength to her family and friends. Each one cherishes time with “Momma”, “Grandma”, “Mee-maw”, “Dearest Sister”, “Ann” and “Aunt Anna Rose”. She was a good neighbor…a best friend… an icon in her community that will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Anna Rose is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Arthur L. Lang; her oldest son Allen L. Lang in 1998; infant grandson Gregory Allen Lang in 1970 and 2 brothers, Andrew M. Meyer and Clyde F. Meyer both in 2019.
She is survived by her son Arden & Samantha Lang of Las Vegas, NV; her daughter Ardis & Ray Ough of Beatrice, NE; her daughter Anita & Don Bents of Pawnee City, NE; 14 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren; brother Eldon & Jane Meyer of Lee Summit, MO; 3 sisters-Ellen Blackwood of Topeka, KS; Ruth Hertzel of Sabetha, KS and Alma Bolliger of Tremont, IL; many nephews, nieces, cousins, neighbors and friends; and her and Art’s little dog Maggie.
