Wayne Lee Thompson was born to Horace and Elsie (McDaniel) Thompson on February 28, 1936 on his grandparents homestead east of Cook, Nebraska. He was one of eleven children born to this union. In February of 1947, Wayne moved to the Tecumseh area with his family. He attended rural school District # 29 and graduated from Tecumseh High School. After high school Wayne worked construction until enlisting in the U.S. Army on December 18, 1956 and served his country in active duty until December 4, 1959 when he transferred to the reserves until his final obligation date of December 17, 1962.
On September 2, 1960 Wayne married Helen Kay Spier. To this union two sons Randy Lee and David Wayne were born.
In October of 1962, Wayne went to work for Tecumseh Transfer for 23 years. In January of 1986 he went to work for Beatrice Freight Line and retired August of 2001. In all, Wayne drove truck for 39 years. Wayne served as the sexton for the Spring Creek Cemetery Association for over 40 years. He always took great pride in the care and upkeep of the cemetery. His wife, Helen Kay passed away October 23, 1996. In May of 1997, Carleen Thompson came to live with him. She passed away January 19, 2008.
Wayne passed away March 27, 2019 at his home in Tecumseh, Nebraska at the age of 83 years.
He is survived by his son Dave Thompson of Tecumseh, two grandchildren, Jonathan Thompson and special friend Jeana and Krystal Thompson, 3 great-grandchildren, Sylas, Liam and Thaddeus, sister-in-law, Norma Thompson of Pawnee City and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, wife Helen, son, Randy, brothers, Melvin “Tommy”, Harold, Robert, Donald “Cork”, Ronald and Gerald “Babe”, sisters, Bessie, Wilma and two infant sisters, Irma and Elizabeth.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2019 at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska with Pastor Howard Blecha officiating.
Visitation will be at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska, Sunday, March 31, 2019 from 1-8 p.m., with family greeting friends from 3-4 p.m.
Memorials may go to the Spring Creek Cemetery, Tecumseh, Nebraska.
Interment will be in the Spring Creek Cemetery, rural Tecumseh, Nebraska with military rites by the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Team and the Tecumseh VFW and American Legion.
