Mercedes Eileen (Kramer) Clifton was born February 25, 1931 to Ernest and Dorthy (Ottens) Kramer in Syracuse, Nebraska. She grew up in Nebraska City, and graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1949.
She was united in marriage to Ray Clifton on December 29, 1950 in Nebraska City, Nebraska. To this union five children were born. Ray was sent overseas January 18, 1951 during the Korean Conflict and Mercedes stayed with Ray’s parents until his discharge in Oct. of 1952.
Mercedes was a loving wife and mother and enjoyed sewing clothes and quilts for her family and gardening and raising flowers, especially hybrid iris and roses. She and Ray loved playing cards with a group of their friends over the years and they both enjoyed bowling and belonged to a bowling league. Mercedes was a talented artist and over the years painted many pictures, saws and did a lot of tole painting.
When their health declined, Ray and Mercedes became residents of Belle Terrace in Tecumseh, Nebraska. Ray passed away April 1, 2016 and Mercedes passed away December 23, 2019 at the age of 88 years.
She is survived by her children, Stephen Clifton and wife Carole of Bennet, Scott Clifton and wife Diane of Tecumseh, Sherry Stephens and husband Vern Ray of Tecumseh and Michael Clifton of Waverly, grandchildren, Steven Bouwens, Laurie Sader, Michelle Haller, Bonnie Chapman, Nicole Clifton, Timothy Clifton, Raymond B. Clifton, Cheryl Hardenberger, Shawn Clifton, Kendra Gottula, Casey Clifton, Justin Clifton, Ryan Stephens, Brienne Blessing, Levi Clifton and Alex Clifton, 29 great-grandchildren, numerous great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, half-sisters, Connie, Sandra, Pamela, Debra and Merry and half-brother, Dennis Kramer, sister-in-law, Rose Kerner of Tecumseh and many friends.
Mercedes was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ray, son, Bradley (4-5-2008) and grandson Nathan Clifton.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 27, 2019 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Tecumseh, Nebraska with Rev. Marcel Kohlmeyer officiating.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, December 26, 2019 at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska.
Memorials may go to the family’s choice or St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Interment will be in the Tecumseh Cemetery, Tecumseh, Nebraska.
