John William Wilmes was born March 15, 1927 near Creighton, Nebraska. Jack grew up on his parents’ farm west of Creighton, Nebraska, with two brothers and two sisters. He attended a country school through the 8th grade and then graduated in 1944 from St. Ludgers High School in Creighton, Nebraska. Jack was active in 4-H and farmed with his father. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska where he received his Bachelor of Science degree.
Jack was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Maly on August 16, 1951 at St. Ludgers Catholic Church in Creighton, Nebraska. To this union four children were born, John J., Patricia Ann, Michael James and Barbara Jean.
Jack was a Vocational Agriculture teacher and farmer in Knox County, County Extension Agent in Merrick, Pierce and Johnson counties, Johnson County Assessor and was a part time employee at Brinkman's in Tecumseh.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis Club. In his spare time Jack enjoyed yard work and gardening, card clubs, dancing, playing pitch, pinochle, cribbage and euchre with family and friends; traveling and attending events of his children and grandchildren. His wife Ruth passed away January 28, 2013.
Jack passed away November 9, 2019 at the Gold Crest Nursing Home in Adams, Nebraska at the age of 92 years.
Left to mourn his passing are his sons, John J. Wilmes and wife Julie of York, NE and Michael J. Wilmes and wife Patti of Topeka, KS, daughters, Patricia A. Johnson of Lenexa, KS and Barbara J. Gottula and husband Dennis “Felco” of Tecumseh, NE, grandchildren, Raye Nord and husband Dan, John P. Wilmes, Nathaniel Johnson and wife Nikole, Ruth Long and husband Jon, Molly Johnson, Michelle Huss and husband James, Joseph Wilmes, Derek Gottula and wife Christine and Aaron Gottula and wife Lacey, great-grandchildren, Joseph, John K., Cecilia, Michael, Anthony and Maria Nord, Jackson, Alivia and Benjamin Gottula, Ellie Gottula and Audrey and Jason Huss, siblings, Robert Wilmes and wife Marlene of Creighton, NE, Mary Ann Moser of Eugene, OR and Marlene Fanta of Creighton, NE, Mary Kay Masters and husband Chris of Crete, NE, Robert Maly and wife Delores of Omaha, NE, Susan Maly of Omaha, sisters-in-law, Janice Maly of Verdigree, NE and Carol Maly of Omaha, NE, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, parents, John and Margaret Wilmes, brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry and Beata Wilmes, Paul Moser, Willie Fanta, Virginia and Gordon Fehringer, James Maly, Sister Susanne Maly and Thomas Maly and parents-in-law, John and Marie Maly.
Mass of Christian Burial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at the St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tecumseh, Nebraska with Father Craig Clinch, Father Thomas McGuire and Father Joseph Walsh officiating.
Visitation will be held at from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. at the church.
Memorials may go the family’s choice.
Interment will be in the St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery, Tecumseh, Nebraska.
