Gerald Stitt Obituary

Gerald D. "Jerry" Stitt, 87, of Lincoln, (formerly Tecumseh), died November 8, 2019.  He was born in Pawnee City, Nebraska and preceded in death by his mother, Eva Caron, and his grandparents, Melvin and Mabel Stitt of Pawnee City.
  Jerry is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughter, Jane Stuart, and husband, Scott, of Lincoln, NE; son, Robert Stitt, and wife, Joan, and grandsons, Joe and Sam Stitt of New Braunfels, TX, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
   In l95l, Jerry attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for two years.  He joined the Air Force and served from 1953 to 1957, being stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  He was aide to the Commanding General, William M. Canterbury.
   On April 25, 1959, he married Marjorie Stewart in the United Methodist Church of Tecumseh.  He was employed by the State of Nebraska Engineering Department from 1958 to 1964.  Jerry and his family moved to Summerfield, KS in 1964 where they purchased the First National Bank in 1966.  He was president of the bank and on the board of directors until he sold it in 1995 and retired, but he continued serving on the board even after the sale.  He also owned and operated the Stitt Insurance Agency.  
   Jerry was active in Lions Club, served on the Fire Department, and clerked city and farm sales.  He was treasurer for the school District USD 488 of Summerfield, Axtell and Bern, KS for many years.  He was a member and past president of the Marshall County Bankers Association.  He joined the Masonic Lodge in Barneston, NE on January 1, 1954.  In 1967 he became a member of the York Rites in Marysville, KS and the Arab Shrine in Topeka, KS.  He belonged to the Nemar Shrine Club in Marysville.  Over the years Jerry held offices, and was past master of the lodge.  Jerry donated blood from an early age until forced to stop due to health reasons.  He had donated more than 13 gallons in his lifetime.
   Upon the return of his family to Tecumseh in 1977, he became active in his children’s school activities and sporting events.  Jerry loved the country life, spending lots of time surveying crops on his farms in Pawnee County.  His hobbies were assembling model cars, driving his 1956 Thunderbird, which he had restored, and raising many vegetables and flowers in his garden.  In later years, he enjoyed vacations with children and grandchildren, and they all attended many football games.  In 2015 Marge and Jerry moved to the Grand Lodge, a retirement community, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

  Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 14, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Tecumseh, Nebraska with Rev. Rob Clark officiating.

   A register book will be available for signatures at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska.

   Memorials may go to the Arab Shriners, Topeka, KS, United Methodist Church, Tecumseh or St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Lincoln, Nebraska.

   Inurnment will be in the Tecumseh Cemetery, Tecumseh, Nebraska.
