Dr. Keith Shuey Obituary

Dr. Keith W. Shuey, 84, of Tecumseh, died Wednesday, April 3, 2024 in Auburn, Nebraska.  He was born September 5, 1939 to Willis and Erma (Steiner) Shuey on the family farm near Crab Orchard.  He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1957. He attended University of Nebraska-Lincoln for 3 years before being accepted to University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha where he graduated in 1964.  Keith fulfilled a 1-year surgical internship at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska where he met a young nursing student named Bonnie.

He was united in marriage to Bonnie Jean Garrett, from Burchard, Nebraska, on October 3, 1965 in Lewiston, Nebraska. This union was blessed with three children.

Keith joined the Nebraska Air Force National Guard in 1965. He moved to Tecumseh in 1966 where he joined Dr. John Schutz in the Johnson County Medical Center. He would continue to provide medical care to southeast Nebraska for the next 49 years.

Doc found enjoyment away from the medical office by spending time on his farm where he loved raising calves for his Shuey Stock Farm and showing cattle with his son Scott and grandchildren over the years.  He had a rather dry sense of humor, but when Doc told you something, he was honest and straight forward and told you the answer you might not want to hear, but it was probably what you needed to hear.  He was an excellent surgeon and delivered many babies and performed many surgeries over the years both in Tecumseh and the Auburn hospitals.  He also rotated many medical students through his office, mentoring them with their education toward their medical careers.

He was very active in the community, including co-founder of the Johnson County Ambulance Service, Tecumseh Public School Board for 12 years, youth baseball coach, member of Tecumseh Economic Development, committee member for the Johnson County Museum, huge supporter of Johnson County Fair and 4-H Clubs, was instrumental in establishing the Belle Terrace Nursing Home, was a member of the Sesostris Shriners and Masonic Lodge and served on the board for the Lewiston Cemetery.

Keith is survived by his wife Bonnie Jean (Garrett) Shuey, Tecumseh, sisters Linda Fewson, Boulder, CO and Charlene Rasmussen, Boulder, CO, brother and sister-in-law Dean and Barbara (Keller) Shuey, Seattle, WA, sister-in-law Mary Ann (Mulligan) Shuey, Fort Myers, Florida, son Scott and Karin (Tan) Shuey, Corning, IA, daughters, Patricia and Paul Bernius, Tulsa, OK and Jennene and Matt Anderson, Crete, NE, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Milton and Marlene (Winterberg) Shuey and Eldon Shuey, sister Marianne and Fred Applegate, infant sister Wilmette and brothers-in-law, Russ Rasmussen and George Fewson.
