He attended the Pleasant Hill and Bratton Union schools and graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1948. Bob was a member of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War from 1952 to 1953 on the U.S.S. Epperson and was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He married Maxine Louise Wiemers on June 6, 1954 at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt.

Bob was a 3rd generation Pawnee County farmer and farmed with his son, Doug, northwest of Humboldt until he retired in 2011. Bob held offices in the Pawnee County Democratic Party and loved to talk politics and going to coffee with “the boys” in Humboldt and Table Rock. He always looked forward to U.S.S. Epperson reunions and visiting with his lifelong Navy buddies, Ken Morrison, Don Brimm, and Loren Block. Bob liked to play the ukelele, which he learned to play while he was in stationed in Hawaii during his years in the Navy; and he loved music, especially ragtime. He loved blowing up fireworks on the 4th of July with all of the extended Workman family and friends on the old family farm. He and his wife liked to go on bus trips, and he especially enjoyed vacationing in Estes Park, Colorado. Bob loved to read and had an amazing ability to memorize and recite poetry. He had many interests, including collecting coins, rocks, seashells, and lighthouses. Bob loved to feed birds and enjoyed taking care of his dogs and cats. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. Bob was a member of the United Methodist Church in Humboldt and was a member of the church choir.
