Emma Lee (King) DeJonge

August 15, 1924 ~ November 3, 2015 (age 91) 91 Years Old


Emma Lee (King) DeJonge, 91, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on August 15, 1924, on a farm southeast of Humboldt, Nebraska to Aaron Silas and Mary E. (Snoke) King.  She was baptized and became a member of the Christian Chruch in Humboldt.  Emma Lee received her early education at Lynchburg District #41 School southeast of Humboldt.  She spent her high school years at Humboldt High School, graduating with the class of 1942.  During high school, Emma Lee was active in her 4-H Club and also Girls Reserve.

On June 15, 1949, Emma Lee was united in marriage to Lammert DeJonge at the Christian Church in Humboldt by Rev. C.W. Long.  After their marriage, Emma Lee became a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Humboldt.  They lived on a farm northeast of Humboldt after their marriage, and then moved to the farm northwest of Humboldt, living there many years before moving into Humboldt after retiring from the farm.  Emma Lee worked for Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company from February of 1943 through June of 1984.  For 41 years, she was an operator and then a cashier.  In 1969, Emma Lee and Lammert were co-owners of the North Side Café along with Dean and Verna Badberg.

Emma Lee was an afternoon member of the LWML and of the Busy Hour Club of Humboldt.  She was a past member of the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary, the Nebraska City Quilters Guild, and was a member of the Humboldt Chamber of Commerce.  Emma Lee has served in the Food Department of the Richardson County Fair, had been a volunteer for the American Red Cross bloodmobile and delivered Meals on Wheels.  She liked to bowl and was on a women’s league for several years.  In 2008, Emma Lee was nominated Women of the Year of the Richardson County Fair.

Emma Lee didn’t have the blessing of becoming a mother, but was a loving, caring aunt to her nieces and nephews.  She enjoyed visiting with family, neighbors, and friends.  She also enjoyed going places, and to events with friends and family.  Emma Lee was an animal lover and took good care of her many pets throughout the years.  Due to failing health, Emma Lee entered the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt on August 31, 2011.  It was there that she passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 having reached the earthly age of ninety-one years, two months, and nineteen days.  She was preceded in death her by parents; in laws Eibo and Elise DeJonge, a brother Dale Robert King, twin brother Everett Lou King, and sisters-in-law: Lucile King and Edna DeJonge, and a brother-in-law George DeJonge.

Emma Lee is survived by her loving husband Lammert DeJonge of Humboldt, NE; sisters-in-law: Ardis King of Humboldt, NE; Lucille DeJonge of Auburn, NE; brothers-in-law: Ommo DeJonge and his wife Marilyn of Humboldt, NE; Ed DeJonge of Humboldt, NE; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Novmeber 7, 2015, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Humboldt, Nebraska with Reverend Jonathan Rathjen officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Friday, Novmeber 6, 2015, at The Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt, Nebraska.

Interment will be at the Humboldt Cemetery.
