With sympathy to the Hupka family for the loss of this great man. As a former Nebraskan, and someone who greatly admires the brave souls who served during WWII, I only wish I could have had the opportunity to meet him in person to say thanks. God keep and bless you all, now, and in the days to come.

To the family of this Great man you have my sincere prayers . I feel close to the entire crew of the Indy for me brother Albert Rice,Afro American, was on board and still at sea. As I look at Clarence's face I am comforted in the thought that he may have known my brother. Mayy the Lord bless all of you his family. Peace and Love

Dear Helen and all your family.....so sorry to hear of the death of our dear friend, Clarence. He and your entire family have been very special for years. So many fond memories of reunions in Indianapolis and Colorado. I love the memories I have of Clarence talking "farm stuff"...he would share "corn" stories and I would share "wheat" business. Paul had so much love and respect for him as a dear friend and shipmate. God Bless you all. Mary Lou Murphy, Secretary of the USS Indianapolis Survivors Org for 25 years and widow of Survivor Paul J Murphy,

Sincere sympathies to Helen and the extended family. I have always stood in awe since I learned of him being one of the Indianapolis survivors.. Amazing strength and spirituality allowed to him to return from the service, marry, and go on to a farming career. I know at times he tried to tell himself the Lord save him for a purpose and wondered what it might be as his life went on. He will now be reunited with most of his shipmates and rewarded for his efforts to be an exemplary member of the " Grandest Generation."

On behalf of Clarence's first cousin Ruth (Kroll) Petersen's family, our sincerest condolences for your loss. Clarence and our dad, Leland Petersen, were on the WWII Honor Flight together back in 2008, and they even sat next to one another on the plane. What an amazing generation of men; we were so fortunate to have them in our lives. May God give you peace at this difficult time.

I had the honor of talking with Clarence on several occasions about his experience during the sinking of the USS Indianapolis . His was an epic tale of survival and fortitude. I came away with not only admiration and respect for what he had gone through but of the man himself. I am gratified that after having survived 5 days of hell he was able to peacefully pass away over 72 years later. He richly deserved that. My sincere condolences to Helen and the whole family. They can be justly proud of his life.

To the family of Clarence, We've enjoyed visiting with Clarence and his wife at different times. He was a great guy. A lot of memories were shared by him and his heroic days and we thank him for serving the country. I bought his book and I enjoyed reading about their sad episode on the water. I wasn't interested in history etc. until I reached a certain age and I think there are a lot of people out there that don't know what he went through and maybe they just have to reach a certain age too. Love to his wife (enjoyed her) and the family. OUR sympathy...
